ABOUT

The Cambridge University German Society was founded in 1908 (or earlier) and consists of students who share a common interest in German society, culture, and history. We aim to encourage intercultural discussions by providing a platform for mutual exchange for both Germans and non-Germans. Our Society welcomes members of all nationalities. We regularly organise talks, exchanges with other societies, and social events.

See our Hall of Fame for speakers who have visited us in the past and check out our Termcard to find out more about our events!

  • BMW MINI Plant Oxford Tour
    12:00-14:00
    2017.11.03

On Saturday the 4th November, our friends from the Oxford German Society are inviting us and the German Societies from London for our termly exchange. The programme for the day has not been confirmed yet, but we will probably go on a city tour, attend Evensong, and go to a Formal Dinner at Christ Church (limited space).

As part of our exchange, I have organised an exclusive guided tour of the BMW MINI Plant Oxford on Friday the 3rd November. Plant Oxford is the birthplace and heart of MINI production. Hundreds of MINIs leave the plant’s assembly lines each day. As a site with 100 years of automotive manufacturing history, Plant Oxford has produced almost 3 million cars since production of the new MINI started in 2001. Website link is here.

We will get the chance to take a look behind the scenes and to find out more about how MINIs are made. The tour will be FREE to attend (an entrance fee is normally required).

The provisional schedule for our Oxford trip is as follows:

    Friday 3rd November

9:30 Departure from Queen’s Road, Cambridge
    13:00 MINI Plant Oxford Tour
16:00 Transfer to Oxford city centre, then free time

    Saturday 4th November

    Exact programme tbc
    23:00 Departure from Oxford

I have booked a private coach for us for both days. The whole round trip (return journey Cambridge-Oxford including the stopover at MINI Plant) will cost £27 per person.

As we have a very limited number of tickets available, sign up details have been sent to our members via email.

Please note that you will have to arrange for your own accommodation. Perhaps you have a friend in Oxford who has a spare bed. Otherwise, there are numerous B&Bs, hotels, and Airbnb. It might also be worth asking your sister college in Oxford if they offer guest rooms. If you can’t find anything, our friends from the Oxford German Society might be able to offer some help, but nothing can be confirmed at this stage.

Don’t miss out on what promises to be a really exciting trip! 🙂
