The Cambridge University German Society was founded in 1908 and consists of students who share a common interest in German society, culture, and history. We aim to encourage intercultural discussions by providing a platform for mutual exchange for both Germans and non-Germans. Our Society welcomes members of all nationalities. We regularly organise talks, exchanges with other societies, and social events.

  • Dusky Paradise – Film Screening and Director Q&A
    20:00-23:00
    2018.01.24

Old Court, Trinity Ln, Cambridge CB2 1TL, UK

Old Court, Trinity Ln, Cambridge CB2 1TL, UK

Come and join us for a screening of the critically acclaimed and award-winning film »Dusky Paradise« (IMDb 7.4), followed by an exclusive Q&A session with director Gregory Kirchhoff!

**The film will be shown in English and we will provide free Ben & Jerry’s**

After his parents’ sudden death, Jacob travels to another country to take care of his inheritance, which turns out to be a dream house with a pool in a picturesque location. And a turtle. Uninterested in any form of social interaction, Jacob spends his days lounging on a deck chair, depleting the considerable stock of alcohol that he finds in the house. But Jacob’s peaceful, apathetic existence is turned upside down when he meets Matteo, a somewhat annoying neighbour – a typical southerner and, of course, his total opposite. Jacob is suddenly forced out of his comfort zone as he becomes increasingly involved in a world of people and emotion. May life be more than eating, drinking, and sleeping?

»Dusky Paradise« is a film about the potential of life. Tackling themes of grief, heartbreak, and feeling lost, the warm cinematography and touching humour of these troubled characters offer a stirring look at the importance of human relationships.

The film was nominated for numerous international awards including the Discovery Award for »Best Debut Feature« at the Raindance Film Festival. It won, amongst others, the National Film Award UK as the »Best Foreign Film« and the Evolutionary Island Award at the Evolution International Film Festival.

‘Personal, stylish, extraordinary performances… Bravo!’ – Academy Award and Palme d’or winner Volker Schlöndorff

‘A silent magic develops as the film slowly draws you into its spell.’ – Babette Schröder, producer of Academy Award winning »The Counterfeiters«

‘This is everything you could ever want from an indie film and more.’ – Raindance Film Festival

Gregory Kirchhoff has been hailed as the next big name in German cinema for the past few years. He was born in 1992 in Hamburg. After studying in England and Spain, Gregory wrote and directed his debut feature »Dusky Paradise« (2016) at the age of 22. His second film, the German tragic-comedy »Ostfriesisch für Anfänger«, was picked up by Universum Film and released nationwide in 2016. His newest film »The Girl of the Hour« is currently in production.
